Assessment is very important in teaching. Assessment to me
is the process used to determine where a student is in that point in time in
their education. It’s a way to see
whether they are ahead, behind, or right on target. A student is assessed by gathering,
analyzing, and interpreting through test where a child is in their class, and
then the information is used to increase the students learning and
development. Assessment can be divided
into two type’s formal and informal assessment. Formal assessment is known as standardize
assessment which is graded while informal assessment is known as alternative
assessment and is not graded it is designed by the teacher to see where the
students are and if they are learning. Assessments can be very useful when done
properly and at the appropriate time. It is important to make sure that the students are learning
from the lessons that they are taught.
The more the teacher checks the students’ progress the more they
understand what the student knows and doesn’t know. Since the teacher is held
accountable for the students learning it is their responsibility to assess the
students informally through chapter quizzes and short assignments. The teacher
needs to be sure that the students are ready and able to pass any formal
assessment and that they are learning and retaining the proper information
correctly. After the assessment the teacher can see where exactly the
child is struggling and pin point those areas individually with the child. If the class assessment comes back where most
of the class does not understand a certain section the teacher can try a
different approach to the information and go over the whole lesson again to
make sure the class is understanding it so when they are assessed again the
results turn out that everyone has learned the lesson and is ready to move
on. Moving forward as a class is easier
than moving forward individually. The
teacher should help the children set goals to encourage them along the way.
Setting goals can be individually and as a class. The teacher should give a
class assessment along with individual assessments to chart and put on
file. This will help the students and
the teacher.
Here is a good website that answers questions about assessment.
I agree with you . I think students should have to test before the subject is taught then after as well .
ReplyDeleteTesting before a lesson was definitely helpful to my learning process. That test gave me an idea of what I needed to learn and pay attention to. I agree that testing is important both and before and after lessons. The only downside is not every student is a test taker.
ReplyDeleteStandardized testing is becoming a controversial subject lately. I feel like teachers are always teaching "to the test." I also agree with giving a short quiz before the lesson to see what the kids already know.
ReplyDeleteA short quiz before teaching the lesson would assist the instructor on how to differentiate instruction. Of course, I don't believe the pre-content quiz should be counted as a grade.
